Why an online coin instead of a real one
Mostly because nobody carries coins any more. But there is a second reason that matters if the decision is contested: a physical coin flip has a surprising number of ways to be argued about. Who flips, who calls, whether it hit the ground, whether the flipper caught it and turned it over. Research on real coin tosses has even found a small bias toward the side that started facing up, because a tossed coin wobbles rather than rotating cleanly.
A virtual flip has none of that. There is no flipper to accuse, no catch, and the two outcomes are exactly equally likely because they come from a single random bit rather than from physics.
What the tally is for
It is not decoration. The most common misunderstanding about randomness is the belief that a fair coin should self-correct — that after four heads, tails is somehow “due”. It is not. Each flip is independent, and the coin has no memory of the last one. The probability of tails on the next flip is 50%, whatever came before.
What actually happens is subtler and easier to see than to explain: the proportion drifts toward half while the gap in raw counts tends to grow. Flip twenty times and you might be at 13–7, which feels wrong. Flip five hundred times and you will likely be near 51%–49% while the absolute difference is larger than it was at twenty flips. Watching the tally do this is the fastest cure for gambler's fallacy that we know of, which is why the counter is on the page.
Runs are also normal. In a hundred flips, a streak of six or seven of the same face is unremarkable — you should expect one. If a coin never produced streaks, that would be evidence it was rigged, not evidence it was fair.
Good and bad uses
A coin flip is the right tool for a genuine two-way tie where you are indifferent: who goes first, which of two equally good restaurants, who takes the early shift. It works precisely because you have already decided the two options are equivalent. Its real value is often psychological — it ends a stalled discussion, and the fact that neither person chose is what makes the outcome acceptable.
It is the wrong tool when you are not indifferent. If you flip and immediately want to flip again, that is useful information: you do have a preference, and you should act on it rather than delegate to a coin. It is also the wrong tool for anything with three or more options — use the wheel rather than a bracket of successive flips, which quietly gives some options better odds than others.
Is it really 50/50, or slightly weighted?
Exactly even. We draw a random value and split the range into two halves of identical size, so there is no rounding leftover to favour one side. We do not track your history to nudge results toward balance, and we do not seed anything from the time of day.
Does the tally survive a reload?
No. It counts the current session only and resets when you reload or close the tab — nothing is stored on our side or yours. If you are running an experiment, copy the numbers before you leave.
Can I flip several coins at once?
Use the dice roller set to two sides. Rolling six two-sided dice is the same as flipping six coins simultaneously, and you get the individual results plus a total.
